Abstract [en]

This article examines the Latvian language as found in the manuscripts of the Moravian Brethren from the 18th and early 19th centuries, offering a sociolinguistic analysis of how standard written Latvian evolved in interaction with spoken dialects. It traces the historical development of Latvian written language from the early Reformation texts to the emergence of a more standardized form following the 1739 Bible revision. Special attention is given to the role of the Moravian Brethren in expanding literacy among Latvian-speaking peasants and fostering a manuscript tradition that included both translated and original religious, didactic, and personal writings. The study analyzes linguistic features at the orthographic, phonetic, morphological, syntactic, and lexical levels, highlighting both adherence to printed language norms and the influence of Vidzeme dialects. German influence is also significant, especially in syntax and vocabulary. The article concludes that the Moravian Brethren manuscripts represent a crucial link between the clerical elite’s written Latvian and a broader vernacular literary culture, thereby contributing to the formation of Latvian as a medium of self-expression, education, and identity.

Abstract [en]

This article investigates the emergence of Standard Latvian, tracing the language’s transformation from a regional vernacular into a standardized literary language between the 16th and the 19th century. The study examines how sociopolitical, religious, and cultural forces – particularly in Livonia and Courland – shaped the codification and stabilization of Latvian. It pays special attention to the role of Lutheran pastors who worked to create Latvian-language texts for religious and educational purposes, often drawing on German linguistic models while simultaneously engaging with the diversity of spoken dialects.

The article discusses the ideological and practical motivations behind standardization, including the needs of catechesis, school instruction, and ethnic identity formation. It also highlights the challenges posed by dialectal variation, the influence of non-native language planners, and the delayed emergence of a native Latvian intellectual elite. The article sheds light on how linguistic norms were negotiated, disseminated, and ultimately accepted by broader Latvian-speaking communities. It contributes to broader discussions on language standardization, nation-building, and the historical development of lesser-used European languages.

Abstract [en]

This article examines the emergence and development of written languages in the Eastern Baltic region, with particular attention to Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian. It analyses the sociolinguistic and political conditions that influenced the use and status of these languages from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Initially, the native languages of the region existed mainly as spoken vernaculars, while written communication was dominated by other languages such as Latin, German and East Slavic. A decisive impulse for the development of written traditions came with the Reformation, which created a need for religious texts in local languages, including catechisms, hymnals and Bible translations. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the growth of linguistic scholarship, Enlightenment ideas and national movements further stimulated the development and standardisation of these languages. The article also discusses language planning and codification in the early twentieth century and the role of language policy in the newly established Baltic states. Finally, it briefly considers the impact of Soviet rule on the status and use of local languages and the subsequent revival of national languages after the restoration of independence. The study highlights the close relationship between language development and broader social, political and cultural processes in the Baltic region.

Abstract [en]

The article analyses the writing system used by the 17th-century Latvian author Georg Mancelius in his early works (parts of the Lutheran church handbook “Lettisch Vade mecum” published in 1631). It examines the spelling used and suggests dividing the orthographic principles as follows: A phonetic principle, a morphemic principle, a lexically traditional principle, a differentiating principle, a purely grammatical principle, and a lexical-grammatical principle. Only the phonetic principle was explicitly formulated by Mancelius himself; the others were deduced through data analysis.

Abstract [lv]

Rakstā analizēta latviešu 17. gadsimta autora Georga Manceļa pirmā darbības posma darbos (1631. gadā izdotās luterāņu baznīcas rokasgrāmatas „Lettisch Vade mecum“ sastāvdaļas) lietotā rakstība, aplūkoti izmantotie rakstības paņēmieni, kā arī noteikti tiem pamatā esošie ortogrāfijas principi. Pirmā posma darbos ir redzami tie galvenie principi, ko Mancelis liek savas uzlabotās rakstības pamatā. Tos rakstā piedāvāts dalīt šādi: fonētiskais princips, morfēmiskais princips, leksiski tradicionālais princips, diferencētājprincips, tīri gramatiskais princips un leksiski gramatiskais princips. No šiem tikai fonētisko principu Mancelis ir pats eksplicīti formulējis, pārējie izsecināti datu analīzes rezultātā.
