Abstract [en]
This article investigates the emergence of Standard Latvian, tracing the language’s transformation from a regional vernacular into a standardized literary language between the 16th and the 19th century. The study examines how sociopolitical, religious, and cultural forces – particularly in Livonia and Courland – shaped the codification and stabilization of Latvian. It pays special attention to the role of Lutheran pastors who worked to create Latvian-language texts for religious and educational purposes, often drawing on German linguistic models while simultaneously engaging with the diversity of spoken dialects.
The article discusses the ideological and practical motivations behind standardization, including the needs of catechesis, school instruction, and ethnic identity formation. It also highlights the challenges posed by dialectal variation, the influence of non-native language planners, and the delayed emergence of a native Latvian intellectual elite. The article sheds light on how linguistic norms were negotiated, disseminated, and ultimately accepted by broader Latvian-speaking communities. It contributes to broader discussions on language standardization, nation-building, and the historical development of lesser-used European languages.
