Based on a pilot study carried out at the end of May 2020, in this text we develop an introductory framework for the study of citizenship and pandemics and the development of the civic or democratic culture in Spain. We present the main results and conclusions of a survey, with a sample of almost 800 individuals, in relation to the importance that citizens gave to some democratic or civic attitudes during the early phases of the pandemic - in particular, to solidarity actions and compliance with rules and authorities during the state of alarm and confinement in the country. Our approach focuses on the behavioral patterns and political culture that individuals shared throughout the pandemic that arose in 2020. The main results allow us to suggest the existence of two ideal dimensions, or types, of civic engagement.

The article explores the transformation of the concept of happiness in political thought from the Enlightenment to the modern nation-state. In the 18th century, Enlightenment ideas redefined happiness, associating it with virtues like well-being, economic stability, and public good, marking a shift from its previous religious connotations. This redefinition of happiness became central to the newly forming nation-states, notably in the United States, France, Spain, and the emerging republics of Latin America, influencing their constitutions and political philosophies. Happiness was no longer an individual pursuit but a collective aspiration, intertwined with liberty and civic virtue, aimed at benefiting the entire community. By tracing these developments, the article underscores how happiness became a political goal, an idea strongly tied to the collective welfare and virtue of society, diverging significantly from the modern, individualistic view.

El artículo explora la transformación del concepto de felicidad en el pensamiento político desde la Ilustración hasta el Estado-nación moderno. En el siglo XVIII, las ideas ilustradas redefinieron la felicidad, vinculándola con valores como el bienestar, la estabilidad económica y el bien público, marcando un cambio desde sus connotaciones religiosas previas. Esta redefinición de la felicidad se volvió central en los Estados-nación en formación, destacadamente en Estados Unidos, Francia, España y las nacientes repúblicas de América Latina, influyendo en sus constituciones y filosofías políticas. La felicidad dejó de ser una búsqueda individual para convertirse en una aspiración colectiva, entrelazada con la libertad y la virtud cívica, orientada al beneficio de toda la comunidad. Al trazar estos desarrollos, el artículo destaca cómo la felicidad se convirtió en un objetivo político, un concepto fuertemente vinculado al bienestar colectivo y la virtud social, diferenciándose significativamente de la visión moderna más individualista.  

Throughout the independent history of Latin America, and especially during the decades after the Third Wave of democratization, the vice presidency has manifested itself as an institution of great political relevance. However, the knowledge about the origins of this office is startlingly scarce, and usually limited to the idea that it was modeled after the Philadelphia Constitution of 1787. There is actually much more to its genesis than that, and within that territory lie the keys to understand the current performance of this office. But that history has never been investigated thus far. This article aims to fill that gap in the literature for the Argentine case, enriching the scrawny reference to imitation with a fourfold argument based on the following elements: the growing trend towards receiving foreign influences through the period 1810–1853; the growing influence of the United States, which will be evident in the 1853 text and even more so in its reform of 1860; the little importance given to the presidential succession (both in Argentina and in the United States); the haste with which the Constitution of 1853 was written.

A lo largo de la historia independiente de América Latina, y especialmente durante las décadas posteriores a la Tercera Ola de democratización, la vicepresidencia se ha manifestado como una institución de gran relevancia política. Sin embargo, el conocimiento acerca de su origen en asombrosamente escaso, y suele limitarse a la idea de que fue concebida como mera imitación de la Constitución de Filadelfia de 1787. Sin embargo, la génesis de este cargo es más compleja que la simple imitación, y en ese proceso yacen algunas claves para entender el desempeño actual de la vicepresidencia. Pero esa historia no ha sido debidamente investigada hasta ahora. Este artículo pretende llenar ese vacío en la literatura para el caso argentino, enriqueciendo la escuálida referencia a la imitación con un argumento basado en los siguientes cuatro elementos: la creciente tendencia a recibir influencias extranjeras durante el período 1810–1853; la creciente influencia de Estados Unidos, que se hará patente en el texto de 1853 y más aún en la reforma de 1860; la escasa importancia concedida a la sucesión presidencial (tanto en Argentina como en Estados Unidos); la prisa con que se redactó la Constitución de 1853.

In this text we introduce the translation of the "The dispossessed", the first chapter of a book published in 1963: The radical right. The New American Right Expanded and Updated. In this book participated several authors and it was edited by the sociologist Daniel Bell, who wrote that first chapter. In this brief introduction we are guided by the following questions: first, why is it interesting today to look at and translate an author like Daniel Bell. Second, to what extent his academic contribution, along with other North American authors of his time, can be consider a modern classic; that is, it helps us to shed light and bring us closer to the present and the reality of a phenomenon like the radical right. Third, to what extent can we apply Bell's proposals and analysis to other political trends and radical actors in the light of the changes that have occurred in the last half century, in this second modernity or reflexive modernization.

En este texto presentamos la traducción del primer capítulo de la obra The radical right. The New American Right Expanded and Updated, publicada en 1962. Dicho capítulo lleva por título “The dispossessed”. El libro, en el que participan numerosos autores, fue editado por elsociólogo Daniel Bell y el mencionado capítulo es de su autoría. En esta breve introducción a laversión española nos guían las siguientes preguntas: primero, por qué es interesante hoy leery traducir a un autor como Daniel Bell. Segundo, en qué medida su contribución académica,junto a la de otros autores de su época, puede ser considerada un clásico contemporáneo, estoes, nos sirve para arrojar luz y aproximarnos al presente y a la realidad de un fenómeno comola derecha radical. Y tercero, hasta qué punto las propuestas y el análisis de Bell puedenaplicarse a otras corrientes políticas y actores radicales a la luz de los cambios acaecidos en elúltimo medio siglo, en esta segunda modernidad de signo reflexivo. 

Numerosos elementos de nuestros sistemas políticos cuentan con un fundamento teórico, con un estudio profundo de los principios teóricos y prácticos que explican su adopción. Por el contrario, la vicepresidencia ha recibido muy escasa atención, aún en países donde esa institución ha ido incrementando su peso político. La combinación de ese gran peso con la mencionada falta de sustento teórico produce notables desviaciones en los análisis de la institución y su desempeño: procuran estudiar el fruto sin conocer las raíces. El objetivo de este artículo es realizar un primer esfuerzo de reflexión teórica en este ámbito, analizando la vicepresidencia en sistemas presidencialistas a la luz de dos principios teóricos: el de inmediatez y el de disponibilidad del poder. 

Many elements of our political systems have a theoretical foundation, a profound study of the theoretical and practical principles that explain their adoption. On the contrary, the vice presidency has received very little attention, even in countries where this institution has been gaining remarkable political weight. The combination of this weight with the aforementioned lack of theoretical support produces notable deviations in the analyses of the institution and its performance — they try to study the fruit without knowing the roots. The aim of this article is to carry out a first theoretical reflection in this field, analysing the vice presidency in presidential systems in light of two theoretical principles — immediacy and availability of power.

En julio de 2019, Valencia acogió el XIII Congreso Español de Sociología. Allí se dieron cita numerosos especialistas en acción colectiva, que compartieron los últimos avances de sus investigaciones bajo la coordinación del Grupo de Trabajo de Movimientos Sociales de la Federación Española de Sociología.

En ese encuentro se sitúa el origen de esta obra.

La riqueza de los estudios allí presentados tuvo su secuela natural en una serie de fecundos debates. Los textos derivados de todo ello reclamaban ser publicados. Y demandaban un armazón que a un tiempo hiciera justicia a su valor individual y destacara las conexiones entre unos y otros, los hilos conceptuales que atraviesan la totalidad. Esta trilogía da respuesta a todo ello. Así, el primer volumen de este libro se ocupa de la Teoría sobre movimientos sociales; el segundo disecciona sus Genealogías; y el tercero reúne Estudios de caso.

Si un principio recorre esta obra, es el de unidad en la diversidad.

Se encontrará el lector aquí con los más diversos movimientos, analizados desde las perspectivas epistemológicas y metodológicas más variadas. Así, estos tres volúmenes son testimonio de un encuentro entre estudiosos de la acción colectiva, pero más aún, son un mapa del conocimiento sobre movimientos sociales existente al terminar el segundo decenio del siglo XXI.
