Abstract [en]

Research has shown the importance of dealing with real-life issues and of enabling student encounters with complexity in chemistry education in order to increase student participation. Therefore, this study aims to analyse how complexity evolves in students’ discussions and how this complexity relates to aspects of tentativeness in chemistry. In the study, we analyse how a previously developed didactic model can be refined from the students’ considerations evolving from the present context. The study was conducted as an in situ study in one upper-secondary school. Students’ discussions were recorded on video. The recordings were transcribed and analysed using deliberative educational questions. Two different kinds of considerations emerged in the students’ discussions: factual and exploratory considerations. While factual considerations are an important element of chemistry education, students also need to encounter exploratory considerations. The study proposes a didactic model useful for teachers in didactic analysis and design of activities aiming to support students to unfold complexity through exploratory considerations. One implication is to base activities on real-life issues in order to invite the unpredictability needed for experiencing complexity and the exploratory nature of chemistry. These issues enable students to experience aspects of tentativeness in chemistry and thereby increase their understanding of NOS and chemistry as a knowledge building practice. Furthermore, this might also increase student participation in chemistry education.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The development of students' capabilities to engage in scientific inquiry is part of the science curricula across the educational system. The purpose of this study is to explo- re the capability to formulate questions for scientific inquiry. The research question is: Which qualitative aspects of knowing are enacted in upper-secondary school students' work with formulating questions for scientific inquiry? The study was conducted as a design-based research study with six interventions in upper-secondary school science education. Data include video and audio recordings. The analysis was conducted as a qualitative content analysis. The results show three qualitative as- pects of knowing how to formulate research questions: Discerning and nuancing the epistemic object, Operationalizing the epistemic object and Evaluating a question for scientific inquiry in relation to the epistemic object.

Abstract [en]

One of the challenges upper-secondary school chemistry is dealing with, is how to contribute to both the development of scientific knowledge and students’ opportunities to develop demo-cratic citizenship. This thesis aims to explore how science education for citizenship and Bildung can develop in different chemistry education contexts. Research shows that chemistry educationis struggling with its relevance in relation to students’ out-of-school experiences. The thesisalso aims to analyse whether activities which enable students to unfold the inherent complexityin chemistry might be one viable approach towards some of the challenges chemistry educationfaces. This thesis is based on two studies which are described in two papers. These studies were conducted as in-situ studies at two upper-secondary schools in Stockholm. Students’ discus-sions were recorded on video and transcribed. The discussions were analysed using Practical Epistemological Analysis (PEA) and Deliberative Educational Questions (DEQ).The first study was conducted with a design based approach in two cycles. A didactic model for complexity in students’ discussions regarding sustainability issues was simultaneously de-veloped. The didactic model was extracted through an analysis of the considerations emerging from the students’ discussions. Four different kinds of considerations emerged: factual consid-erations with sufficient facts, factual considerations with insufficient facts, value-based consid-erations with sufficient facts, and value-based considerations with insufficient facts. Design principles for educational activities that aim to support students in the visualisation of complex-ity in sustainability issues were also developed. The second study was conducted in a context that focussed on the chemistry content (i.e., metabolism in the human body) rather than environmental or societal perspectives. In this con-text, two kinds of considerations emerged: factual and exploratory considerations. The analysis showed that these only partly overlapped with the previous categories. Hence, the didactic model for complexity was refined in the new context. The study shows the importance of enabling students to experience chemistry as tentative, as this can contribute to increased student participation. One conclusion is that while factual considerations are an important element of chemistryeducation, students also need to encounter other kinds of considerations. The results indicate that different kinds of considerations are needed to facilitate complexity in students’ discussions. One implication for education is that chemistry education needs to include activities that enable students to encounter uncertainty, as uncertainty and unpredictability seem to facilitate different kinds of considerations, and thereby complexity. The importance of introducing un-certainty into chemistry education is underlined by the didactic models. I argue that the models can be a valuable contribution to teachers’ reasoning and decision-making in the design andanalysis of activities in chemistry education.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

To meet future challenges regarding sustainability issues, science education needs to address how to educate scientifically literate and responsible citizens. Chemistry education must be organized in a way that gives the students opportunity to participate in discussions and decision-making regarding sustainability issues in which chemistry knowledge is needed. One aspect of education for responsible citizenship is to draw students’ attention to the complexity in sustainability issues.

The aim of this study is to analyse how complexity in sustainability issues can be visualized in upper secondary school chemistry education.

This study was conducted as a didactic modelling inspired by Design Based Research. Two cycles were conducted: cycle 1 with 12 students discussing batteries in different products and cycle 2 with 38 students discussing organic pollutants in everyday products. The data was analysed using Practical Epistemological Analysis (PEA) (Wickman & Östman, 2002) and Deliberative Educational Questions (DEQ) (Lundegård & Wickman, 2007).

Four different kinds of considerations emerged in students’ discussions which were used to develop a didactic model visualizing complexity. Those considerations regarded facts and values in relation to sufficient and insufficient factual knowledge. All four kinds of considerations are needed to visualize complexity.

The results showed that conflicting perspectives/values and the issues’ incompleteness and uncertainty only emerged to a small extent in the students’ discussions in cycle 1. In cycle 2 all four kinds of considerations emerged more equally. The design principles in cycle 2 were that the students’ activity should explicitly request conflicting perspectives and values and also include frontier research in chemistry. The result indicates that those gave the students more opportunities to visualize complexity.

The didactic model and design principles that were developed can together be used for teaching and learning from sustainability issues in chemistry education.
