Abstract [en]

This article examines the unsynchronized and synchronized lapses of time, in terms of “child time” and “plant time,” in two Swedish picturebooks where the relationship between children and plants becomes displayed as the main theme: En blommas liv (The life of a flower, 2008) by Stefan Casta and Sara Lundberg as well as Maskrosdagen (Dandelion day, 2012) by Per Gustavsson. Through eco-critical analytical readings of the picturebooks, we aim to highlight how the lapses of time are depicted and how plant time and child time relate to one another through the iconotext of the picturebooks. Firstly, we argue that the depictions of plant time and child time in the two picturebooks coincide in certain moments to produce synchronized, shared lapses of time. Secondly, our eco-critical readings delve into how chrononormativity as a concept comes to be played out in the two stories, pointing out reductionist ways of depicting plant time. We conclude by discussing the picturebooks as works of art, through which ephemeral moments of shared and overlapping life conditions are produced between humans and non-human species.

Abstract [en]

The present paper explores how the video games of Minecraft and Super Mario become enacted through children's play, material settings and toys in a Swedish preschool. Ethnographic methods, including participant observations and informal conversations, have been used and the empirical materials produced have been analyzed with methodological resources from Actor-Network Theory. The analysis focuses on how Minecraft and Super Mario become enacted through relations between children's bodies, physical movements as well as material interiors and exteriors of the preschool. Moreover, the analysis shows how multiple versions of the games of Minecraft and Super Mario become enacted in the preschool setting depending on what elements become active in a particular situation. On the whole, the findings of the paper question grand narratives on active and passive gameplaying children, featuring children and local settings as producers of digital popular culture.

Abstract [en]

Against the backdrop of human-induced climate change and severe biodiversity loss, feminist technoscience scholars stress the need for movements towards less anthropocentric knowledge production processes. The present paper delves into the alignment work involved in striving to coordinate and align human-centred epistemic cultures and epistemic cultures centring other species. In an early childhood education site, children, teachers, materials, imagination and the attribution of human traits to snails are elaborated on as key actors. In a literary fiction site, also referred to as environmental imagination, texts, choices of literary style, scientific facts and the attribution of human traits to eels, are featured as actors accomplishing alignment work. The paper argues that adding the concept of the terrestrial to the analysis of the alignment work, as proposed by feminist technoscience scholar Donna Haraway, makes other aspects and versions of non-anthropocentric or less anthropocentric knowledge production processes visible. The paper adds to STS-discussions on alignment work through highlighting alignment work processes as political, power-producing processes, which privilege certain interests while downplaying others.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Relational materialism was first articulated and framed within Actor Network Theory. In educational research, the concept has emerged with the growing influence of Agential Realism and New Material Feminism, and in the engagements in the “turn to materiality” and/or “turn to ontology.” A relational materialist approach to educational studies can be narrowed down to three key principles: the principle of general symmetry; the principle of material semiotics; and the principle of method. The enactment of relational materialism depends on how these principles come to work in the engagement with central educational problems, such as subjectivity, performativity and practice. Relational materialism takes the starting-point in the problems and concerns of human and material actors or agents, for whom the research can make a difference. While doing so, it acknowledges the methodological difficulties and possibilities when carefully attending simultaneously to discourse, materialities and their relations. Striving towards a methodological sensibility, the enactment of relational materialism in education research entails the emergence and creation of more and multiple methods to know the multiple realities of education. This also makes it possible for relational materialist research to become productive of new and additional educational realities that can, perhaps, make an affirmative difference to the actors or agents concerned.

Abstract [en]

Drawing on the empirical case of an evaluation meeting in a Stockholm preschool as well as participant observations over a period of 10 months, this paper uses an Actor-Network Theory methodology to explores the actors and relations that emerge when an evaluations are made. The principle of general symmetry is used to create knowledge of the way evaluations are made from relations among teachers, children’s games, toy guns, evaluation goals and sub-headings. The study specifically highlights the ability of verbal discussions to embrace ambivalence in relation to, for example, everyday children’s games with toy guns in the preschool. The paper argues that ambivalence is productive and influential in the evaluation process, even though it is not included in final evaluation texts.
