Abstract [en]

This year’s keynote takes us to the farthest reach of the archaeological pro-cess: the point where finds and findings are presented in museum exhibi-tions. Søren Sindbæk presents a critical review of two major new exhibitions on the Viking Age which have recently opened at two of Scandinavia’s most prominent museums, the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm and the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. Both museums aim to at-tract increased tourist numbers, an appeal which Sindbaek suggests leads paradoxically to more culturally conservative and nationally focused ex-hibitions. Responses by Håkon Glørstad, Caroline Owman, Fredrik Svan-berg, Matthias Toplak, Chris Tuckley and Howard Williams explore con-straints and opportunities in displaying the Viking Age internationally.

Abstract [en]

This article discusses how the early south Scandinavian Bronze Age chronological systems have been created based on the evidence of raw material and artefacts as well as a gendered perspective. When does the south Scandinavian Bronze Age start? Are our chronologies gender-specific, and therefore fundamentally biased, or do they cross sex boundaries? This question is explored drawing mainly on burial material from the Sögel-Wohlde and Valsømagle cultures. The aim of this article is to inspire discussion and debate about how we classify the south Scandinavian Bronze Age.

Abstract [en]

This article considers technical, cultural and gender-related aspects of textile production in southern Scandinavia and northern Germany during the Middle Bronze Age. Specifically, female networks and weaving technology are discussed through the different combinations of s- and y- spun thread. It is argued that textile technology is a cultural phenomenon that was spread through female interaction. These lines of communication and interaction shift over time, but at a rate that is demonstrably different from other changes in the society as seen on e.g. bronze objects that are more likely to be a result of male interactions and exchange networks. The study as a whole demonstrates that the textile evidence is a rich and informative source for Middle Bronze Age society, providing a key to understanding female identity and cultural change

Abstract [en]

Cultural interaction between east and west. Archaeology, artefacts and human contacts in northern Europe is a book of honour for Ingmar Jansson, lector of Archaeology at the University of Stockholm. Ingmar Jansson is one of the key people who has made a significant contribution towards creating opportunities for intellectual exchanges – exchanges of archaeologists, ideas and archaeological knowledge – between East and West. His efforts have opened up the channels of communication and knowledge across geographical borders, and created countless opportunities that would not otherwise have existed for both colleagues and students in Sweden and Eastern Europe.

Ingmar Janssons passion for the Viking Age and Eastern Europe is the theme that characterizes the publication. However, there are also articles that treat subjects such as Historical Archaeology, the History of Archaeology, the Stone Age, Old Norse language, scientific methods in archaeology, heritage management, numismatics and the relationship between archaeological relations and geopolitical changes. The book contains 57 articles by authors from 11 different countries. One of the great contributions of the book is that it contains a great variety of subjects and that new archaeological material and interpretations from Eastern and Western Europe. The Editorial Board is confident that this volume will inspire scholars to new studies, knowledge and discussions about Archaeology and Cultural

interactions between east and west.
