Abstract [en]

This study has explored the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) approach and implementation in six green schools in Sweden and Türkiye through a whole-school approach (WSA) lens. Interviews were conducted with nine teachers and three principals from each country. Based on the thematic analysis of the interviews, the authors reached four overarching conclusions that need to be developed in terms of integration of WSA to ESD in the green schools in both countries: 1) a comprehensive vision of sustainability; 2) an intrinsic view regarding purpose and pedagogy of ESD; 3) student participation across all aspects of the WSA; and 4) empowering an active community partnership. Furthermore, the research delved into the internal and external factors that either enable or hinder implementation of ESD within green schools. Drawing upon the case studies in two countries, the authors propose certain suggestions for the effective integration of WSA to ESD in green schools.

Abstract [sv]

Medel från Rektors 5:e utlysning för kvalitetsutveckling för utbildning har använts för att genomföra en genomlysning av Stockholms universitets (SU) lärarprogram med avseende på didaktik och hållbar utveckling. Didaktik belyser undervisningens genomförande medan hållbar utveckling innebär att nuvarande och kommande generationer försäkras en hållbar ekologisk, ekonomisk och social utveckling.

Representanter från de institutioner som ansvarar för Stockholms universitets lärarprogram har samlats regelbundet under 2019-2020. Medverkande institutioner är Institutionen för pedagogik och didaktik (IPD), Institutionen för de humanistiska och samhällsvetenskapliga ämnenas didaktik (HSD), Institutionen för matematikämnets och naturvetenskapsämnenas didaktik (MND), Barn- och ungdomsvetenskapliga institutionen (BUV) och Institutionen för språkdidaktik (ISD).

Behovet av denna genomlysning grundas i högskolelagen (1992:1434) som ålägger alla lärosäten att verka för hållbar utveckling och att högskoleförordningen tydliggör att ett examensmål för lärarexamen, oavsett lärarprogram och inriktning, är undervisning för hållbar utveckling.

Syftet med genomlysningen är att ge underlag för att utveckla kvalitén med avseende på didaktiska perspektiv på hållbar utveckling i de lärarprogram som ges på SU. Underlaget består av att i kursplaner och litteraturlistor identifiera var och i vilken utsträckning hållbar utveckling behandlas i lärarprogrammen samt identifiera möjligheter för att inkludera hållbar utveckling inom respektive lärarprogram

I föreliggande rapport presenteras resultaten från genomlysningen av respektive lärarprogram. Totalt genomlystes 289 kursplaner från 10 lärarprogram. I kursplanerna studerades kursens innehållsbeskrivning, förväntade studieresultat och kurslitteratur. Kopplingen till didaktik och hållbar utveckling uttrycks i tre nivåer: ingen, viss eller direkt koppling. Sett över samtliga innehållsbeskrivningar är fördelningen att 3% av kurserna hade direkt koppling, 12% viss koppling och 85% ingen koppling till didaktik och hållbar utveckling. Mönstret var likartat för Förväntade studieresultat och Kurslitteratur (se Tabell 1). Resultatet visar att det finns ett stort behov av att skapa gemensamma förutsättningar för en utvecklingsprocess mot en didaktik för hållbar utveckling för samtliga lärarprogram på Stockholms universitet.

I rapporten pekas på programrådens roll som central för att påskynda implementeringen av hållbar utveckling på lärarprogrammen på Stockholms universitet. Programråden har möjlighet att samordna både kurser och lärarutbildare inom och mellan lärarprogram för att säkerställa att alla lärarstudenter examineras med avseende på didaktik och hållbar utveckling.

Följaktligen befinner sig Lärarprogrammen på Stockholms universitet inför en rad didaktiska och organisatoriska utmaningar för att uppfylla delmålet i lärarexamensordningen rörande didaktik och hållbar utveckling. Hållbar utveckling är interdisciplinärt och skapar därför behov av samarbete och samordning mellan institutioner. I denna samordning spelar programråden för respektive lärarprogram en central roll.

Abstract [en]

This study investigates functions of the concept of selective traditions by means of a qualitative systematic review synthesis of earlier research. The study is based on a review method for integrating qualitative studies and looks for themes in or across them. In this case, it is about how the identified publications (twenty-four in total) use the concept of selective traditions. All but two studies stem from the Swedish context. The selective traditions relate to teachers' approaches to the content, methods and purposes of environmental and sustainability education (ESE). Teachers mainly work within one specific selective tradition. Seven different functions were found in the publications of which five are claimed to be valuable for the development of ESE teaching, while the other two functions are useful in monitoring changes and development in ESE teaching. The results are discussed in terms of the consequences for research, practice and teacher education aiming at offering suggestions on how to develop future (transformative) ESE teaching.

Purpose Since 2006, higher education institutions (HEIs) in Sweden, should according to the Higher Education Act, promote sustainable development (SD). In 2016, the Swedish Government asked the Swedish higher education authority to evaluate how this study is proceeding. The authority chose to focus on education. This paper aims to produce a report on this evaluation. Design/methodology/approach All 47 HEIs in Sweden were asked to write a self-evaluation report based on certain evaluation criteria. A panel was appointed consisting of academics and representatives for students and working life. The panel wrote an evaluation of each HEI, a report on general findings and recommendations, and gave an overall judgement of each HEI in two classes as follows: the HEI has well-developed processes for integration of SD in education or the HEI needs to develop their processes. Findings Overall, a mixed picture developed. Most HEIs could give examples of programmes or courses where SD was integrated. However, less than half of the HEIs had overarching goals for integration of SD in education or had a systematic follow-up of these goals. Even fewer worked specifically with pedagogy and didactics, teaching and learning methods and environments, sustainability competences or other characters of education for SD. Overall, only 12 out of 47 got a higher judgement. Originality/value This is a unique study in which all HEIs in a country are evaluated. This provides unique possibilities for identifying success factors and barriers. The importance of the leadership of the HEIs became clear.

In many countries' policy documents and curricula, teachers in the subject areas of science, social science and language are encouraged to collaborate on cross-curricular issues such as sustainable development (SD). This study is conducted in secondary schools (compulsory years 7-9) in Sweden and investigates the similarities and differences in the responses of ten teacher groups (forty-three teachers in total) to questions about their teaching contributions in their own subject areas to education for sustainable development (ESD). The overall aim is to understand how teachers of these three subject areas can contribute to cross-curricular teaching in teacher teams in the context of ESD. This is done by analysing the group responses from data collected in group discussions concerning the teaching dimensions what (content), how (methods) and why (purposes) in relation to ESD. We first analyse the teacher group responses and arguments regarding their contribution to ESD teaching from each subject area separately. Thereafter, we comparatively analyse how the different subject areas' contributions overlap or complement each other in a potential collaborative ESD teaching. The results show that teachers from different subject areas stress different yet complimentary dimensions of teaching and perspectives of ESD. The implications for cross-curricular teaching in ESD are also discussed.
