This article deals with a sculpture workshop on the Swedish island of Gotland, referred to as Byzantios (second half of the 12th century). Special attention is paid to issues concerning the sources of the master's style. Comparative analysis with stone carvings in Russia, Italy and Germany shows a development of Byzantios' style that begins with classical forms which then gradually deviates from the source material.
