Titel [sv]
Out-of-Africa: länken mellan människans historia och genomiska variationsmönster
Titel [en]
The exodus from Africa: linking human history and genomic patterns of variation
Abstract [sv]
One of the greatest challenges of the post-genomic era is to ?develop a detailed understanding of the heritable variation in the human genome? (Collins et al. 2003). The pattern of genetic variation in humans is the result of a complex evolutionary history, and conversely, information about major demographic events in human history is hidden in the patterns of genetic variation. The key to unlock this information lies in utilizing genome-wide population-genetic data combined with modern statistical methods. We are now in a position where it is possible to advance our knowledge on the tight link between patterns of human variation and the demographic history of our species. A defining event in human pre-history is the exodus of anatomically modern humans from Africa. Not only was the exodus the starting-point of human dominance of our planet, it also shaped the pattern of genetic variation of humans that populate the globe today. We will 1) collect genome-wide population-genetic data from 15 East African populations, 2) develop a statistical method for making inferences about human evolutionary history, and 3) investigate one of the most influential demographic events in human history: the exodus from Africa. By characterizing genetic variation among individuals and populations, we can gain a better understanding of human evolutionary history, differential susceptibility to disease, and the complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors in producing phenotypes.
