Multilevel selection in filamentous fungi: a clue to the evolution of multicellularity
Abstract [sv]
Natural selection acting at different levels is expected to drive the aggregation of smaller independent units to form new, more complex, layers of biological organization. For example, this process is expected to have driven the evolution of multicellularity. Here I propose a project to study multilevel selection in the filamentous fungus Neurospora tetrasperma. This species grows as heterokaryotic (i.e., the mycelium contains multiple different nuclei) and can be considered as an intermediate between a uni- and multicellular organism. We will use experimental evolution combined with whole-genome sequencing to investigate: 1) Mutation accumulation in the haploid nuclei of a mycelium: does the heterokaryotic state allow for mutational sheltering? 2) Multilevel selection in the fungal hyphae: a case of conflict, cooperation or kin selection? In the first project, we will transfer heterokaryotic individuals through sexual generations and induce mutations with UV, to search for mutational sheltering of the nuclei. In the second project, we will evolve nuclei to different selective regimes, and mix the adapted nuclei into a common mycelium. By estimating fitness of the heterokaryotic and the component haploid mycelia, we can distinguish between conflict and cooperation of the nuclei. The proposed project will shed light on the evolutionary roles of, and interactions between, multiple levels of selection in fungi, and ultimately on the evolutionary transition to multicellularity.
