Title [sv]
Strängar och knutar i måttfältteorier
Title [en]
Strings and Knots in Gauge Theories
Abstract [sv]
This research project addresses a complex theoretical issue that is of substantial relevance to high energy physics and also condensed matter physics, and whose solution requires a highly demanding combination of both analytical and computational skills and techniques: We are interested in the construction and analysis of string-like structures with a complicated, non-pointlike geometrical shape such as a nontrivial knot. The general class of field theory models that we consider involves both gauge fields and scalar fields, alternatively field variables that can be related to these by changes of variables. In the case of applications to the Standard Model, the scalar field is the Higgs field while in the case of applications to condensed matter physics it can describe either a condensate (superconductors) or extrinsic string curvature (protein folding).
