Title [sv]
Principen om psykologisk förbundenhet
Title [en]
The principle of psychological connectedness
Abstract [sv]
The goal of this project is to investigate the meaning and role of personal identity in how people evaluate their current self image and in how they make decisions about future actions. The key idea is that people try to maintain and develop their identity as a guiding scheme for their acting. Personal identity is defined in terms of psychological connectedness, which stands for psychological connections between one?s current self and one´s self backwards and forwards in time, but also for connections between parts of one´s current self. The principle of psychological connectedness implies that people may prioritize maintaining their identity before preferring happiness to unhappiness. Five empirical studies are planned in the project. The first study is exploratory and investigates the components of the experience that a person is the same across different points of time and/or or situations. The other studies test various predictions about people´s preferences and emotions that can be done from the principle that people try to maintain or maximize psychological connectedness between parts one´s self on one occasion (studies 2 and 3) or between one´s selves at different points of time (studies 4 and 5). The project implies possibilities to develop theories on preferences and decision making where the goal (psychological connectedness or utility maximization) is in focus rather than the means of attaining the goal (e.g., by appropriate information integration).
