The time warp of doctoral education in Sweden when pursuing a PhD is entangled with motherhood

Abstract [en]

This paper presentation explores the entanglement of motherhood and being a PhD candidate, using Karen Barad's concept of spacetimemattering to understand how these identities mutually constitute and shape each other (Barad, 2007). The added responsibilities and complexities of motherhood disrupt the traditional linear understanding of time and space in a PhD program. The flexibility inherent in the Swedish PhD program allows for pauses in the program for reasons such as parenting responsibilities without loss of time. In this sense, motherhood and the PhD program are not separate or external to each other but rather are brought into being through their specific relational intra-actions. By highlighting the entanglement of motherhood and PhD program intra-actions, this presentation emphasizes the importance of creating a caring and inclusive environment that recognizes and accommodates the mutual constitution of motherhood and doctoral education, and the way these identities shape and are shaped by the spacetimemattering of the academic community.
