Ice Stratigraphy Using Video Cameras for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

Abstract [en]

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory instruments approximately 1 km3 of deep Antarctic glacial ice, with 5160 optical sensors registering Cherenkov radiations produced by charged particles passing at relativistic velocities. To reconstruct the path of the detected charged particles, the optical sensors are arranged in a 3D-array at depths between 1450m and 2450m. Proper calibration of the sensors is fundamental to reconstruct the charged particles trajectories. Since the path reconstruction depends on the Cherenkov light radiated in ice, it is essential to know and understand the ice proprieties of the region. Different studies have been made on the characteristics of the Antarctic ice and several methods have been used to map specific regions. This thesis presents an additional method to map local ice properties. This innovative approach relies on using video cameras recording ice walls while descending during sensors deployment in the drilled hole. Adding more information with different methods contributes to a more accurate calibration of IceCube.
