Abstract [en]

This study analyses the discursive portrayal of the Finnish Roma in two Finnish tabloid papers, Ilta-Sanomat and Iltalehti. By utilising a combination of two qualitative methods, critical discourse analysis (CDA) and semi-structured focused interviews, the thesis aims to examine the discursive strategies that are used in the tabloid papers to represent the Finnish Roma, as well as how those discourses are decoded by Roma interviewees. Additionally, the study introduces the concept of 'in- betweenness': a notion of how the Roma are often discursively placed in-between the 'Other' and 'Us', which has been evident in previous research. Hence, the thesis also analyses how tabloid discourses sustain this discursive in-betweenness and examines whether the results of the focused interviews support that. The first method focuses on 28 tabloid articles from the years 2015–2019, and a narrowed selection of those is discussed with 12 interviewees. Results of both methods show signs of in-betweenness, constructed by representation of the Roma in an explicitly Othering manner, while simultaneously offering representations in which the Roma are portrayed in a rather positive light. Analysis of the results of both methods shows that discourses categorisable as positive are few but necessary in order to offer the audience neutral tabloid representations of the Finnish Roma people.
