Walter Berendsohn gilt als Nestor der deutschen Exilliteraturforschung. 1933 in das skandinavische Exil getrieben, blieb ihm eine vollständige akademische Rehabilitation nach 1945 jahrzehntelang verwehrt. Von Stockholm aus setzte er sich von Anfang an, vermehrt aber seit den 1960er Jahren, energisch für eine systematische Erforschung des Exils ein und initiierte 1969 das 1. Internationale Symposium zur Erforschung „Deutscher Literatur der Flüchtlinge aus dem Dritten Reich“. Berendsohn war außerdem Biograf und Förderer der Schriftstellerin Nelly Sachs (1891–1970).
