Abstract [en] During the last decades, context-based teaching approaches have been developed as an alternative to more conventional forms of science teaching and as a way to make learning of science more meaningful for the students. However, previous studies have shown that context-based teaching does not automatically result in students’ learning progressions that provide the opportunities to learn the scientific content. The aim of this thesis is to explore how learning progressions can be established in a context-based science unit and how teaching can be planned to create a continuity between the context and the scientific content. The study was performed in grade 8 in a Swedish secondary school. One science class was followed during a contextbased unit in Biology in which the Ebola virus disease was used as an overall context. The scientific content of the unit focused in the spread of infections, viral and bacterial diseases and the immunological system. The empirical data consists of field notes, video- and audio recordings from four out of ten lessons of the unit. The thesis is based on two studies described in two papers. The first study focuses in one lesson of the unit and examine how the didactical model organizing purposes can be used to plan and subsequently analyse learning progressions. The results show that the model organizing purposes can be a useful tool for teachers in planning and analysing context-based science teaching. Moreover, the results show how the teacher in moment-to-moment interactions with the students worked to establish continuity in education, for instance by inviting students to use their previous experiences and language in relation to the new scientific content. The second study focuses on how learning progressions were established during and between four lessons in the unit and how the context and scientific content were embedded in teaching. The analysis of teaching shows a considerable variation in how learning progressions were constituted during the sequence of lessons. In two lessons, continuity between proximate and ultimate purposes was clearly evidenced in teacher and students’ interactions. In these lessons, the context was embedded in teaching and a strong link between the context and scientific content was established in the interactions. Moreover, Ebola, besides functioning as a motivating context for the students, helped the students in their learning of the scientific content. The results of this thesis highlight some factors of importance in context-based science education, for instance to plan for explicit connections between the context and scientific content during the instructions and to create teaching activities experienced as relevant for the students.
