(In)finite water : A study of how preschool children as connoisseurs engage in social environmental issues (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this doctoral thesis in early childhood education is, together with preschool children, to explore the actor, water, in different ways in order to explore, develop and create forms of and methods for engagement and participation in social and scientific environmental issues. More specifically, the purpose of this exploration with preschool children and water – as a specific actor and more-than-human partner – is to investigate how or with what methods it is possible to produce and encourage engagement, in which the preschool child is taken to be a connoisseur of our central contemporary environmental issues. The theoretical and methodological starting points for this project are taken in Posthumanist knowledge-creating practices with Donna Haraway, Isabelle Stengers and Anna L. Tsing as main sources of inspiration. The practical explorations, The water project, was done with preschool children, aged 3–5, and was carried out as a Posthumanist intervention study, for which the researcher installed herself in two preschools’ existing, ongoing practices. During the nine-month long water project the researcher and the preschool children together with the actor, water, explored local environmental issues in connection to water. The research process was based on the children’s situated knowledges and locally produced here-and-now questions around water and environmental issues. Other crucial actors in this process were multidisciplinary knowledges and methods from the fields of geoscience and early childhood education. The empirical material, consisting of digital images, films, drawings and notes, was produced jointly by the preschool children and the researcher, and analysed with the support of posthuman theory and storytelling, inspired by Haraway, Stengers and Tsing. With such storytelling, text, images, film and theory are shaped and reconstructed into new narratives that identify and problematise relationships between different actors on the same or on different scales, from molecular to global. These are stories produced with children as connoisseurs of local practices, co-produced with water and other actors; for example, the troubles of draught and its effects on organisms and the troubles of wastewater in contemporary society: stories which constitute the result of this research. This thesis consists of three research articles and an introductory text. The first article problematises the question of how water emerged as method in joint concrete explorations of water and which environmental issues that were important to the preschool children. The second article elaborates on the preschool children’s, researcher’s and water specialists’ engagement with the hydrosocial cycle as a common matter of concern. The third article draws attention to environmental education in preschool, in its focus on preschool children’s and researcher’s engagement with water purification, starting with the preschool children’s situated knowledge about polluted water and their questions about how water can be purified.

Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to show how water emerged as a research method nearby and within a small stream during a 9-month fieldwork carried out with preschool children. The fieldwork was informed and shaped by the preschool children’s and researcher’s situated knowledges and their questions about environmental issues concerning water, absence of water, pollution and ethics. The empirical material consists of films and photos, drawings and field notes, produced together by the preschool children and the researcher during the research. The analysis draws on relational ontology and the writings of Isabelle Stengers and Donna Haraway. The article concludes with a discussion about what can be learnt from the study and its contribution to research within the fields of Early Childhood Education and Environmental Education.

Abstract [en]

This article aims to investigate environmental education in preschools by taking Donna Haraway’s call of staying with the trouble together with preschool children seriously, here-and-now, in explorations of dirty water and water purification. This posthumanist inspired research project draws theoretically and methodologically on the writings of Haraway, Anna L. Tsing and Isabelle Stengers. The empirical data consist of three stories from a multidisciplinary intervention research project in the Stockholm region in Sweden, collected from collaboratively produced data such as films, photographs, drawings, and notes from the project. The study can be seen as an invitation to preschools to engage in the debate on climate change and to create a togetherness around environmental concerns, not only in the future, but also here-and-now in the preschool.
