This article examines the unsynchronized and synchronized lapses of time, in terms of “child time” and “plant time,” in two Swedish picturebooks where the relationship between children and plants becomes displayed as the main theme: En blommas liv (The life of a flower, 2008) by Stefan Casta and Sara Lundberg as well as Maskrosdagen (Dandelion day, 2012) by Per Gustavsson. Through eco-critical analytical readings of the picturebooks, we aim to highlight how the lapses of time are depicted and how plant time and child time relate to one another through the iconotext of the picturebooks. Firstly, we argue that the depictions of plant time and child time in the two picturebooks coincide in certain moments to produce synchronized, shared lapses of time. Secondly, our eco-critical readings delve into how chrononormativity as a concept comes to be played out in the two stories, pointing out reductionist ways of depicting plant time. We conclude by discussing the picturebooks as works of art, through which ephemeral moments of shared and overlapping life conditions are produced between humans and non-human species.
