This report together with Papers 1—11 constitute a dissertation on the subjects of Scalar Tensor Theories, Topology of Space-Time and Supergravity. These three areas are briefly introduced for providing a background to the work in 1—11. A general discussion of motivations for modifications of the Einstein theory is also offered.
