The tradition of presidential inaugural addresses in the United States of America dates back to 1732 and George Washington. Well known is the complex, and many times abstract issues the politicians handle in their speeches. To reach their audience and create understanding for the people, who are not as familiar with political issues, politicians use rhetorical techniques. The usages of conceptual metaphors are one of them, which is the topic of this study. In this study inaugural addresses by Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump will be analyzed through conceptual metaphors theory, this in order to explore the usage and function of conceptual metaphors in these particular speeches. Focus will be on three different conceptual domains, Person-, war- and journey domain and through metaphorical expressions conceptualized by these domains. The conclusion drawn by the study is that conceptual metaphors are being used in these inaugural speeches to create a greater understanding for the audience. It is also possible to draw the conclusion that the conceptual metaphors function as a means for persuasion of ideologies and justification for action and goals made by the Administration.
