The growing popularity of E-sports gives way for new ways of analyzing the language surrounding it. By looking at both traditional sports announcer talk (SAT) and E-sports announcer talk (ESAT), the differences and similarities between the two became a point of interest, especially their use of futurity expressions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify and analyze expressions of futurity, in both baseball (SAT) and StarCraft 2 (ESAT) to understand how they differ in both frequency, usage and purpose. The study’s research questions were thus: What expressions of futurity are used in each sport? What is the frequency of futurity expressions in each sport’s commentary? And lastly for what purpose is futurity used in each sport’s commentary? Utilizing a combination of definitions of what expressions of futurity were, according to O'Byrne (2017) and Close (1970), the material was listened to and instances of futurity were transcribed, including some context, for further analysis. The futurity expressions were then classified according to their construction type and meaning/usage. From the analysis it became clear that StarCraft 2 had a much higher frequency of futurity expressions and utilized different constructions compared to the baseball commentary. There were also differences in the purpose of these futurity expressions in each sport, where baseball frequently used purely temporal expressions of future time while StarCraft 2 showed a higher degree of predictive statements. In conclusion, what the casters focus on in each game is radically different and it shows how traditional sports such as baseball and modern e-sports such as StarCraft 2 have large differences that dictate the nature of the commentary surrounding them. Further research on the topic of e-sports and its commentary is needed to more fully understand what differentiates it from traditional sports commentary.
