The tetralogy “Neapolitan novels” by the Italian writer Elena Ferrante has gained broad international success. Especially in the USA, the four books and the TV-series based on them have caused the phenomenon named “Ferrante Fever”. The reception of the novels can be analyzed from a transnational perspective, drawing on a theoretical framework based on comparative literature and world literature. Tiziana De Rogatis has presented four frames, which contribute to the international success of the novels: 1) the description of the city of Naples where most of the events take place, 2) the feminine subjectivity described through the main protagonists, 3) the memoir style plot covering some sixty years of the protagonists’ life and, 4) the TV-series like narration. The validity of these frames is analyzed in the reception of the books in Switzerland where the readers read either the German or French translations or the original in Italian. The corpus consists mainly of book reviews published in newspapers and reader comments on bookstores’ websites. The analysis shows that, of the frames, the description of Naples and feminine subjectivity stand out as the main contributors to the positive reception in Switzerland. Also,some other contributing factors are identified.
