This study highlights the ambiguity of the concept of sustainability and the challenges associated with how it is interpreted. The study uses Stockholm Wood-city as a case study to investigate how the agenda of sustainability is pursued and which area of sustainability has the primary focus in relation to urban planning and development. Sustainability is something that most people think they understand the meaning of, but they primarily associate it with ecological aspects with relation to environmental impacts. In fact, the concept can encompass almost all areas of a society, including economic, social, political sustainability and cultural. Aspects of governance will also be discussed to see how municipalities and property developers collaborate and who becomes the driving factors in these projects linked to the collective work towards a sustainable urban and property development. The development of the areas related to property developments and how its perceived, will also be a part of this thesis study to see how the progress have developed since the emergence of sustainable development ideals and the rise of private developers. In conclusion this study examines the concept of sustainability and its interpretation in the context of urban planning. It uses Stockholm Wood-city as a case study to explore how the sustainability agenda is pursued and which areas of sustainability are prioritized. The study also discusses the role of governance in sustainable urban planning and property development and its emergence the last decades. The methods in this study will be based on a qualitative case study with the influx of an interview study of the Stockholm Wood-City and related stakeholders within and around the project. The methods will then help us understand and find the key concepts of this study with relation to sustainability, developments, planning and potential dilemma and conflict.
