Abstract [en]

The chapter discusses the material factors that involved the process of becoming a nun in Baroque Rome. Moving from the parental home to be educated in convents, many aristocratic girls decided to stay in order to become professed nuns. This complex process included a stipulated dowry, lavish furnishing for the convent cell and specific ceremonials of both religious and secular character that preceeded the final profession of religious vows. Portraits were painted in their honour and regular family apartments were constructed. The formation of becoming a nun was finalized by the activity of independet patronage that most aristocratic nuns took up once they were finally settled in the convent.
