“It sounds cooler to say it in English”: A qualitative study on Swedish youths’ views on the functions of English
Stockholm University, Faculty of Humanities, Department of English.
2024 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This qualitative study investigates the perceptions of the English language’s functions among Swedish upper secondary students to understand their views on the different functions of the language. This study uses semi-structured interviews to obtain detailed and personal responses from the participants, illustrating how they view the roles of English in their everyday lives and in society. The theoretical framework of this study is based on Hult’s (2017) analysis of Swedish educational policy and is categorized into five different functions based on Phillipson (2006, 2008): Lingua Emotiva, Lingua Cultura, Lingua Academica, Lingua Economica, and Lingua Tyrannosaura, where each function represents a specific aspect of the use of the English language. The study concludes by presenting limitations to the understanding and perceptions of some functions among Swedish youth and discusses possible reasons and factors for this.
