This thesis explores how exhibitions of interactive new media art engage audiences and how curatorial strategies shape these experiences. Through three case studies—Everything Before, Everything After, Cyber Physical: Architecture in Real Time, and Interspatial Echoes—the study looks at different formats including generative touchscreen art, immersive projection, and augmented reality in public space. The research shows that in all cases, meaning only comes alive when audiences take part, making participation essential. The analysis draws on theories of representation and interactivity to explain how visitors become co-creators of the artworks. The findings highlight the role of curators in designing spaces, technologies, and instructions that make interaction possible. The thesis suggests that curating interactive art requires a careful balance: giving audiences enough guidance to take part while keeping the experience open for exploration and discovery.
