Gränsväktare och normbrytare: En studie av tre transpersoners berättelser om kropp och vardagsliv i ett könsdikotomt samhälle.2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Sweden is the first country in the world to have introduced the so-called Vision Zero (Nollvisionen). This is an ethical approach suggesting that road safety cannot be traded for mobility. Since the beginning of mass-motoring, men have been over-represented in traffic safety statistics, in terms of both ‘causing’ accidents and casualties. Against the background of the Swedish Vision Zero, it is quite extraordinary how little attention work on traffic safety has paid to men’s over-representation in Swedish fatal road accidents (90%), and (auto)mobility as a way of doing gender. The present article discusses how men and women driver subjects are produced through the Vision Zero discourse, with a particular focus on how men in traffic are constructed. This is important since such constructions and modes of address affect possible interventions and ‘solutions’ regarding road safety issues. Here I focus on three contemporary documents of policy making character or with general impact: first, the Governmental Act 2003 on road safety intervention; second, a report from the Swedish Road Administration which is applying a gender equality discourse on transport; and third a brochure issued by the Road Administration addressed to the everyday road user. These documents constitute case material that is illustrative of the Vision Zero as a generative apparatus of gender discourse. The article brings attention to the ambiguous ways in which the Vision Zero may, on the one hand, explicitly address men as problematic driver subjects, as an explicitly gendered high risk category; and, on the other, make men and masculine norms implicit through the rendering of young(er) driver subjects as problematic. This also involves pointing out women as an up and coming high risk category. To improve road safety, the discursive effects of this configuration suggest allocating responsibility partly to the ‘system’, partly to women driver subjects – in effect, to women who drive like men – rather than the men driver subjects.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Maskuliniteter i The O.C. : En textanalytisk studie av maskuliniteter i teveserien The O.C. 2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the popular cultural form of television within the field of gender studies. The study focuses on the representation of masculinities in the American television series The O.C. This is done by using textual analysis to gain information from the first and the second season of The O.C. The theoretical framework used is based on Judith Butler and R.W. Connell. The result of the study is that The O.C. can be said to show that alternative masculinities are less worthy and lower in the hierarchy. Another result is that the series is heteronormative.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with persons who have physical impairments and their knowledge and experience regarding disability, sexuality and gender.

In many contexts physical ability remains unmarked. In the context of body abilities, a function able body is the norm. The study is grounded in Robert McRuers crip theory. The aim of the thesis is to investigate the ideas of how a normal body should look like, behave and express its sexuality and gender. How these ideas may influence the bodies and actions that try to challenge the norm. By focusing on the informants stories, I reveal and highlight, belittling norms and discourses that render various subjects as asexual and genderless. I show with these stories a possibility for resistance against the norm and these discourses. In their stories they make references to what they think is respectable sexuality and the normate body. Who has the right to claim that body? The informants take action against the norm by making themselves attractive, feminine/masculine, sexual and acquisitive. In the end it all comes down to which bodies that have the right to express themselves as sexual.

"Jag slog honom flera gånger och kysste honom mellan varje slag": Incest, pedofili, sadomasochism och gotik i Carina Rydbergs roman Månaderna utan R2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Queera hobbitar: Samkönat begär i J.R.R. Tolkiens The Lord of the Rings2004Student paper second term, 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Naruto mon amour: Maskulinitet i shonen manga2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study I examine the representation of masculinity in the manga, Naruto

The manga is about the orphan Naruto, who, together with other children goes to a ninja school. Boys and girls study and practice together, at first sight seemingly without emphasized gender differences. As the story continues, the gender differences are, however, quite obvious and to the boys advantage.

I find the difference between Naruto and other popular culture ususally presented to pre-bubertal and teenage boys to be considerable. Whereas the domination of women and the message that you can get as far as you wish, are common in American and west produced popular culture as well as in Naruto, the difference lies in how the success is achieved. The men in Naruto reach their goals by allowing their feelings to be seen and expressed. They cry, love, comfort and hate, the feelings give the men strength  The loving is not sexualized, but expressedly aimed at friends, pupils and all of humankind, and the outcome is a wish to protect the loved ones. The hate on the other hand is considered as a one-way road, and Naruto’s power is his ability to make those who have given in to hate to see this.

A cultural studies approach allows me to argue för seeing Naruto as part of what is constructing masculinity in Sweden today. The hegemonic masculinity in Naruto is confident, healthy and white. It differs from femininity by expressing it’s goals and by reaching victory in the battles it parttake. It is however also loving, caring, comforting and able to express sadness and loneliness as well as anger.

Tankar om kickboxning i skolan som en väg till att nå ökad jämställdhet2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to, based on interviews and document studies, critically discuss how the introduction of kickboxing in Physical Education (PE) could affect gender equality in society. Based on a queer feminist and norm critical perspective on the prevailing teaching of PE, which, despite official efforts to challenge and modernize PE, persists in reproducing gender norms by e.g. spending 75% of class time on ball games. The hypothesis is that girls accessing violence (empowerment) through a bodily awareness in the form of kickboxing, positively would challenge the power imbalance that gender norms create. Girls are brought up, even today, in accordance with gender norms arguing against girls/women wanting to use their bodies as powerful tools to set limits. In accordance with the traditional Ling gymnastics, in which body and mind develops into a harmonious whole, the introduction of kickboxing in PE would have a major impact on how girls and boys could relate to each other in the community as well as develop the mind and body in harmony. It can be hypothesized that by including kickboxing in PE girls' bodies would be given the opportunity to be powerful, thus enable girls as well as boys to identify themselves as transcendent individuals rather than to experience the powerlessness and mental illness which often develops already during puberty.

Citizen Buck – Reflections on Pearl Buck and questions of representation2006In: Gender and Citizenship In a Multicultural Context: 6th European Gender Research Conference, University of Łódź, Poland, 2006-08-31/2006-09-03, 2006Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper will discuss the bestselling writer and Nobel Laureate Pearl Buck (1892-1973). The overall purpose is to discuss issues of representation and citizenship (in a broad sense) from a feminist and postcolonial perspective. In spite of Pearl Bucks outstanding literary career and bestselling history she belongs to the group of (women) writers that today are almost totally forgotten. Fallen into oblivion even more is her work as an intellectual raising her voice against racism and sexism. (At least this is the case in Sweden. In the Nationalencyklopedin - the Swedish national Encyclopaedia- she is described very briefly as an American writer and Nobel Laureate; the article does not mention her work as an intellectual. There are also almost no articles written about her during the last thirty years. For example Peter Conn’s important biography Pearl S. Buck. A Cultural biography from 1996 did not get any attention in Sweden. Peter Conn’s biography is also one of the few studies of Buck and her work that has been done.) I believe that her work as a writer and an intellectual (in the true Bourdieuan sense of the word) can contribute to our understanding of a number of important questions that are on the agenda today. In this paper I will focus on gender and race and the questions of citizenship and representation. Pearl Buck as a citizen practising her rights and fulfilling her obligations as a citizen will surely teach us something about gender and citizenship in a multicultural context.
